I started this sketch a while back with plans to use it for a class. I drew it out and then set it aside thinking I'd finish it "later." I needed to get it finished as the deadline was looming, but I felt a lot of resistance towards starting it.
Deadlines are a beautiful thing as
they make us finish things we'd otherwise continue to put off. With the deadline fast approaching, I pulled the work out and started asking questions to help me figure out what the problem was and why I was dragging my feet. Do I want to do this? Do I like the subject matter? If so, then why am I not getting this finished up?
Turns out I wasn't digging the background. It took up a lot of space, but it didn't really add anything to the
overall piece. Once I sussed out the problem, it was fairly straightforward as to how I was going to fix it.
I worked out some thumbnails with a smaller background, titles, and journaling and before long, I was re-engaged with the piece! Working through a few more changes as I painted gave me the piece you see above. Some times it pays to ask the question, "Why do I...not want to do this/finish this/like this?" The answer can tell you a whole lot
about what's working...and what's not! To read the entire blog post, please click the link below.
