A FREE Hand-Lettering Glue Resist Tutorial
Come and join me over at The Imaginary Realm for this FREE Tutorial on using a glue resist to create patterns inside of your letters! Not a big fan of lettering? This is one of those tutorials that will have you thinking of other ways to incorporate it into your art (designs in the background, zentangle, saving highlights, etc.).

Over on my Instagram account (@laure.ferlita), I often post my lettering pieces. By no means am I lettering artist as that takes years of dedicated practice and my attention span is way too short, but I do love to play with letters as an art form. So when I came upon a cool piece of art made with a glue resist, I had to try it!

I have had so much fun with it! I decided to do a tutorial so you could join in the fun as well. If you're interested in giving this a whirl—and I assure you it's as easy as can be—just click HERE for the tutorial.
Working With Green Pigments...
Speaking of tutorials...with another class coming up at Selby Gardens and an Art Trip to England hovering off in August, it seemed like a good idea to discuss those icky greens that show up on many pre-filled travel palettes. Many travel palettes come with viridian or phthalo green and while the colors are pretty, the greens are not very natural looking, as in not at all! Making friends with those pigments will go a long way towards making painting the great outdoors a whole lot easier!

The first post addresses finding out just what that green pigment will look like when mixed with the other pigments on the palette and can be found here

The second post takes what we learned in our experiments from the first post and puts them into action by painting simple subjects and can be found at this link.

The third post, which will appear on Friday, March 17th (not so coincidentally St. Patrick's Day!), and will address using green mixes in landscape sketches as well as creating the look of a grouping of leaves without having to paint each and every one.
Painting A Fabulous PINK Flamingo!
Could there be anything more fun to paint than a Flamingo?! I'm not sure what it would be. Of course, if these birds weren't pink but gray and brown, it would seem as though pterodactyls still walked (flew?) upon the earth. But they are pink and that makes them a joy for artists to capture in our sketchbooks!

This Independent Learning Class is available at The Imaginary Realm!

The class is structured around strengthening drawing skills by introducing a simplified grid system as well as helping you learn to suggest detail rather than rendering every feather. The video demonstration goes step-by-step from working with the grid system to using yellows, orange, pinks and violets to capture the sense of light hitting the bird's feathers.

Once we begin painting, we'll use suggested details and broken-color washes to give the bird volume and depth

Independent Learning Classes are self-paced and there is not interaction with me as the teacher. This class format is excellent for those of us with a busy, demanding schedule or those who do not like to participate in an interactive class environment online.

When you sign up for the class, you'll have access to the materials for 365 days and you can watch the videos as many times as you'd like within that year. There's also a downloadable materials list and instructions that are yours to keep forever.

And maybe, if we're lucky enough, we might just get to meet up at one of several workshop opportunities that are coming up this year! See below for more info!
P.S. There are lots of other classes available at The Imaginary Realm for you to enjoy!
UPCOMING Workshop Fun!
An Imaginary Trip Made Real
To England!
There are still a few places left!!
English gardens, cottages with thatched roofs, rolling meadows, cobblestone streets and small shops to wander around...doesn't that sound like fun?

This week-long workshop will be taking place in Stratford-Upon-Avon, Shakespeare's birthplace.

We'll be there August 14th through the 20th and the days will be chocked full of small demos and discussions as we go through our day's activities. We'll have plenty of time to work in our sketchbooks, both in the mornings and afternoons, to finish pages, ask questions and share our kits and such!

In addition to just being there, we'll be taking in a high tea as well as a boat ride on one of the many canals. We'll have an opportunity to visit Blenheim Palace, the birthplace and ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill. Just looking at some of the imagery from the area, I can tell you there's more than enough to fill a sketchbook or three.

The class will be structured towards getting you out sketching in the gardens in no time. There will class time at the beginning and end of our visits with time to go out and sketch in between! This class will take place Friday, April 21st. By The Way...I would LOVE to come to your city to teach! If you belong to an art group or league, PLEASE pass my name and email address on to your Workshop Coordinator and let's get together!! I love to travel, but what I really love is to connect with the folks who love to sketch and splash around in the paint!
